MLB Draft Scouting Report: Gerrit Cole
Events Scouted: UCLA Regular Season, Team USA
Gerrit Cole is exactly what scouts envision for a hard throwing righty starter in the big leagues. He has the height, the strong lower half and the long limbs. He's about where he's going to be long term when it comes to body type, but he might added some strength in the upper body.
For durability purposes, Gerrit Cole's delivery does the job. He uses his lower body effectively and gets some great hip rotation. But, what's currently hurting his command is his front side. He's landing much too firmly on his front side because he's consistently jumping off his back leg a little early. When you start seeing a softer landing with his stride foot, you'll see better command from Cole.
There's not a better fastball in the 2011 draft class. Cole sits steadily at 94-97 mph, and will go through stretches where he sits at 95-98 mph. He'll touch triple digits, but his command is at its best when he's down around 94-95. That's where his movement is best and he's hitting his spots best there as well. He maintains his velocity from the stretch as well. His fastball command overall is fringy right now, but should get better as he learns to harness that velocity and gets his mechanics in order.
Another plus offering from Cole, his slider sits at 86-88 mph and has true slider bite in every way. The slider drops off the table and is particularly tough on lefties going down and in toward their feet. He needs to get ahead in counts more often to use it, but it's a plus swing and miss pitch when he's on his game.
The changeup is another potential plus pitch for Cole. He throws it with outstanding differential at 83-85 mph and his arm speed matches the fastball. Again, spotting it is a bit of a work in progress for him, but it's a swing and miss pitch when he's on.
Consistency is the name of the game with Cole. His stuff is scary good when he's right, and if he's throwing strikes he's close to untouchable. His mechanics are still a bit of a work in progress consistency wise, but when those come around so will his command of his three quality pitches.
