Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Justin Verlander

Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Justin Verlander

Starting pitchers are perhaps the biggest factor in whether a team succeeds in the postseason. For that reason, some of the most detailed scouting reports are compiled on these opposing starters. Here's a look at what playoff opponents will see from Tigers' starter, Justin Verlander.

Arsenal

Fastball: 94-99 MPH
Curveball: 78-81 MPH
Changeup: 85-87 MPH
Slider: 84-87 MPH

The Skinny: The electrifying fastball is what everyone knows about Justin Verlander, but his changeup is probably the biggest reason for his monstrous 2011 campaign. He's potentially even tougher on lefties now than righties and it's become a true strikeout offering for him. It has big fade down and away, and when you have to honor a 98 MPH fastball, it's a near unhittable pitch.

The curveball is still a plus weapon for him, but it's the changeup that puts Verlander over the top.
