Scouting Playoff Pitchers: C.J. Wilson

Starting pitchers are perhaps the biggest factor in whether a team succeeds in the postseason. For that reason, some of the most detailed scouting reports are compiled on these opposing starters. Here’s a look at what playoff opponents will see from Rangers' starter, C.J. Wilson.

Fastball: 90-94 MPH
Curveball: 75-78 MPH
Cutter: 87-89 MPH
Slider: 82-84 MPH
Changeup: 81-84 MPH

The Skinny: For a guy who use to be a reliever, what C.J. Wilson has done is highly impressive. Not only does he have enough pitches in his arsenal, but has a very deep and quality repertoire. His fastball obviously grades out as a plus but but his curveball and slider/cutter make him a very difficult at-bat for both lefties and righties.

Righties need to be ready for that cutter and slider diving in at their back foot. If he has that going, you’ll see a large number of swing and misses. He uses the changeup a bit more sparsely but it’s something he’ll pull out on occasion.
