Chris Carpenter's three-hit shutout powered St. Louis over the Phillies in deciding Game 5 of the…
Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Chris Carpenter
Fastball: 92-95 MPH
Slider: 86-89 MPH
Curveball: 74-76 MPH
Changeup: 85-87 MPH
The Skinny: A lot of people comment about Chris Carpenter not being quite what he once was. Well, his raw stuff doesn't really agree with that notion. Carpenter can still crank it up to 94 MPH pretty routinely and he has the sharp, plus slider and big breaking curveball.
Carpenter is every bit of the pitcher he's always been and right now he's on the very top of his game. He locates his fastball as well as anyone in the National League and much like Roy Halladay is able to keep hitters constantly guessing and constantly on the defensive.
