Scouting Playoff Pitchers: Chris Carpenter

Starting pitchers are perhaps the biggest factor in whether a team succeeds in the postseason. For that reason, some of the most detailed scouting reports are compiled on these opposing starters. Here’s a look at what playoff opponents will see from Cardinals' starter, Chris Carpenter.

Fastball: 92-95 MPH
Slider: 86-89 MPH
Curveball: 74-76 MPH
Changeup: 85-87 MPH

The Skinny: A lot of people comment about Chris Carpenter not being quite what he once was. Well, his raw stuff doesn’t really agree with that notion. Carpenter can still crank it up to 94 MPH pretty routinely and he has the sharp, plus slider and big breaking curveball.

Carpenter is every bit of the pitcher he’s always been and right now he’s on the very top of his game. He locates his fastball as well as anyone in the National League and much like Roy Halladay is able to keep hitters constantly guessing and constantly on the defensive.
