2012 Draft Scouting Report: Dominic Leone
Events Scouted: Cape Cod League
Leone is undersized as a starter. But, he does have some athleticism and strength on his side. Height will obviously work against him, but his deep arsenal may help him make up for that.
The right-hander is very under control in his delivery. He doesn't create a great plane given his height, but he stays on top pretty consistently. His stride is a bit inconsistent right now, leading to some spotty command of his secondary pitches at times.
When he's at his best, Leone is confident and working off his fastball early in counts. He has a number of secondary pitches to go to, but it would serve him well to be a little more aggressive with that fastball. His four-seam fastball has some nice life at 90-92 mph, but he's not going to rely on movement and will need to live on the corners of the plate.
The curveball is a solid show pitch for Leone. He can drop it in early in counts at 75-78 mph with 12-6 action. It's a fringe offering, but he uses it well enough to keep good hitters off balance.
Leone's changeup is clearly his best offering and is about a 55 offering on the 20-80 scale and could grow into being a true plus offering. He throws it at 80-83 mph with some nice downward fade and good arm action.
Also in the mix is a short slider for Leone. He throws it at 81-84 mph with some quick diving action. It's not a swing and miss pitch, but it's a tough read when he throws it off his fastball.
Leone will be drafted for what he is. He's a back end of the rotation type starter but he has the arsenal and feel for pitching to move up the ladder quickly. If he can master his command, he could be a good number four starter in the big leagues.
