2012 Draft Scouting Report: Zach Eflin
School: Hagerty H.S. (Fla.)
Events Scouted: PG National Showcase
Projection is a big part of what makes Eflin such an attractive prospect. He's already gained some strength in the last few months, but there's plenty more on the way. When he fills out, he'll have an ideal, long, athletic pitcher's frame.
The arm action is clean and smooth from Eflin, but there are some inconsistencies in his delivery. He tends to spin off to the first base side. Balance is a bit of an issue throughout his delivery. If he can gather a little better at his balance point, it should improve his overall command and consistency.
Eflin's fastball velocity has already made some tremendous progress. In the last year, he's gone from a pitcher sitting around 87-90 to consistently living in the 89-93 mph range, and reaching as high as 95. Given his projectability, we should expect to see him eventually living comfortably around 91-94 mph.
The curveball is currently a solid weapon for Eflin and only figures to get better as he gets his mechanics under control. He throws it at 73-77 mph with some sharp 12-6 action. The command is not consistent yet but this is a big league average offering in the making.
Completing his quality three pitch mix is Eflin's changeup. He shows some arm side fade and solid command. Thrown at 80-82 mph, Eflin shows good differential and is very confident in throwing his changeup in most situations.
Zach Eflin is already realizing some of his great potential. He's already flashing mid 90s velocity and a feel for two quality secondary offerings. If he can continue to sit in the low 90s with his fastball this spring, he could very well sneak into the back of the first round in June.
