2012 Draft Scouting Report: R.J. Alvarez
School: Florida Atlantic
Events Scouted: Cape Cod League
Alvarez is a strongly built right-hander with a mature frame. There's some strength in his lower half and a little room to fill out in his upper body. He shows solid athleticism as well.
There's some deception in Alvarez' delivery. He makes himself very difficult to pick up from a three-quarter arm slot, but there are also some tough parts to repeat in his delivery. And, there's also some effort involved, which makes him much more well suited for his current bullpen role.
Alvarez is the owner of an explosive fastball. He sits consistently at 94-96 mph out of the bullpen and touches 97 routinely. And, this velocity even seems to play up a tick or two more given the swings hitters get off Alvarez. He seems to have corrected some of the fastball command issues he's had in the past.
The curveball is what makes Alvarez a prime candidate to be a closer at the next level. A true plus, swing and miss offering, his curveball shows sharp 12-6 action at 78-82 mph. His location has improved with this offering and should allow him to consistently miss bats at the professional level.
The intriguing aspect of Alvarez' game is his changeup. Despite the fact that he logically fits in the bullpen as a professional, his quality changeup leaves the door open just a bit for him to potentially start. Thrown at 81-85 mph, he shows good differential and arm speed, and the location is fairly consistent as well.
Aside from the presence of his changeup, all signs point to Alvarez working in the pen as a professional. He has two knockout offerings in his curveball and fastball, and is now throwing more than enough strikes to be trusted at the end of a ballgame.
