2012 Draft Scouting Report: Austin Maddox
Events Scouted: Spring Season
Maddox has a history of being able to help a team on different parts of the diamond, so he clearly is a pretty solid athlete. He has the extra strong frame of a big league pitcher and his physique should remain pretty much the same in the coming years.
Scouts have credited Maddox for calming down his high effort delivery in the last year. There's still some effort involved, but the lessened effort has opened the door just a crack for some scouts to consider him a potential starter as a professional.
Maddox and his power arm are a good fit for the closer's role. He works at 92-95 mph and gets it up to 96-97 mph occasionally. This pitch shows outstanding life through the zone and nets him a large number of weak swings.
The slider is his bread and butter. It's a true slider at 84-88 mph with dot and drop type action. He does a pretty good job of spotting it and because of that command it should be a swing and miss pitch in the pros.
For a guy pitching at the end of games, the changeup is a surprising weapon for Maddox. It has the potential to be an average pitch at 82-84 mph.
Maddox will likely go in the top two rounds as a closer, purely based on his stuff. But, there also may be a team out there who believes he can start because of his frame and his three pitch mix.
