2012 Draft Scouting Report: Jason Carmichael

2012 Draft Scouting Report: Jason Carmichael

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of an amateur career. As part of our 2012 draft coverage here at Scout.com, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look at prep pitcher, Jason Carmichael.

Name: Jason Carmichael
Position: Pitcher
School: Mariner H.S. (Fla.)
Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 170
Bats/Throws: R/R

Events Scouted: Perfect Game National

Physical Description

Projection is the key word here. Carmichael's 170 pound frame has all the room in the world to fill out and when that happens we could very easily see a velocity spike. He's an excellent athlete, with long limbs and quick twitch actions.

Mechanics

Carmichael gets a good downward plane on his pitches. I'd like to see him get his lower half a little more involved, but he has a whip quick arm and it comes over the top pretty smooth.

Fastball

It's all about where you project the fastball with Carmichael. He currently lives at 88-91 mph, touching 92 at times. As thin as he is, that's almost certainly going to jump up and you could see him living at 90-93 down the road. He spots pretty well but it's a little straight as well.

Curveball

The curveball is a fringe offering for Carmichael right now. He spins a good one every so often but mostly it tumbles and comes in at 75-78 mph.

Slider

The slider appears to be a pitch Carmichael is more comfortable with currently. It's shows sharp 11-5 bite at 81-83 mph and he has spotted it fairly well.

Summation

You're picking Carmichael for his huge projection. He has a live, loose arm and he's flashed an ability to spin a breaking ball. Someone will take him off the board between rounds three and five.
