2012 Draft Scouting Report: Nolan Fontana
Events Scouted: Spring Season
Fontana has a smallish frame but he's a better than average athlete. He's somewhat thick in the lower half but it doesn't seem to impact his agility at all. What he looks like now is probably what you can bank on long term as well.
He's going to be a slashing style singles and doubles hitter at the next level. He hits from a solid base and mostly uses his hands and uses them very well.
The power game is not going to be a featured aspect of Fontana's game. You can expect about 10 home runs annually from him.
Sure-handed is the term that comes to mind with Fontana. He makes all the plays and has the range to make the spectacular play in the hole as well.
Fontana is not a burner but he's maybe a step better than average. He's going to need to be sure to maintain that speed as he matures to keep his value.
Fontana's upside is not huge, but he's giving some team a very safe bet to be a shortstop in the big leagues. The only question is if he's going to be more of a fringe regular or a legitimate everyday player.
