The 2012 Cape Cod League All-Star game is being held this Saturday in Harwich, Mass., and to say the very least, Whitehouse Field is a humble venue.
That can be said for all the fields on the Cape, where the parks are unassuming, but the big league talent shines bright. Set against a classical, old time baseball backdrop, the Cape has produced talent ranging from Thurman Munson to Buster Posey.
The lists of Cape Cod League alumni read like MLB All-Star rosters of past and present. The league history is littered with MVPs, Cy Young Award winners and Gold Glove winners. There's even a fair share of Hall of Famers and playoff heroes on that list as well.
In other words, if you're a college baseball player, more often than that, the path to big league stardom is directly through Cape Cod. Its reputation as a talent-producing machine has only allowed the league to grow stronger in recent years, and we've even seen players turn down the opportunity to play for Team USA in order to come to the Cape.
According to Cape Cod League records, 946 of their former players have gone on to the big leagues. And, on a year-to-year basis over the past five years, there's been an average of over 200 former Cape League players playing in Major League action each season.
The numbers speak for themselves, but the names speak even louder. On Saturday evening, FOX College Sports will be carrying a live broadcast of the 2012 Cape Cod League All-Star game. Given the numbers and the league's history of producing talent, you have to like your chances of catching a glimpse of future big league star.
