2013 Draft Scouting Report: Jonathon Crawford

Scouting reports are the foundation of the talent evaluation system, and the reports that are used on draft day are developed from multiple viewings over the course of an amateur career. As part of our draft coverage, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know on draft day. Here's a look at college pitcher, Jonathon Crawford.

Scouting Report:

Crawford is a solidly built athlete who appears slightly bigger than his listed height of 6-foot-1. He has a strong lower half, and what you see now is likely what you're going to get long term. He's not a projection case, as he's already very physically mature. Crawford repeats his delivery relatively well, but there are some question marks surrounding his arm action. It's quick, but has some violence to it. His delivery also makes him very difficult for hitters to pick up, however.

As for the stuff, it's as electric as you'll find. The righty lives around 94-96 mph with his fastball, which also has good late running life. The changeup is flashed now and then, but he's mostly about the fastball and slider right now. And, that slider also grades out as a plus offering. Thrown at 84-86 mph, it has late two-plane bite and will be a swing and miss offering at the next level.

The big question for Crawford will be whether he can start or not, and whether his delivery will hold up. If you believe his arm action is clean enough, he does possess front of the rotation type stuff. But, in a worse case scenario you have a righty arm with a Craig Kimbrel type of arsenal that could close games in the big leagues.
