Rockies Notes: 12/6

The Colorado Rockies were surprisingly active at this year's Winter Meetings in Nashville. The Rockies made a trade for a late inning reliever, signed Jeff Francis again, and added another arm via the Rule 5 Draft. More on these moves and rumors from the Winter Meetings in this edition of Rockies Notes.

-- On Thursday the Rockies selected left-handed pitcher Daniel Rosenbaum, formerly of the Washington Nationals organization, with the third overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft. According to Baseball America's Jim Callis, Rosenbaum is a command specialist with a fastball in the 84-90 mph range and a "fringy" curveball. Rosenbaum, who was selected by the Nationals in the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB Draft from Xavier University, spent the 2012 season at Double-A Harrisburg. In 155 1/3 innings over 26 starts, he posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 5.7 K/9, and 2.3 BB/9. Rosenabum figures to merely provide the Rockies with some depth whether they decide to use him as a starter or (most likely) reliever.

-- The Phillies acquired outfielder Ben Revere from the Twins for pitchers Vance Worley and minor leaguer Trevor May, who was rated the top prospect in the Phillies system. How does this impact the Rockies? Well, it means there is another team that no longer needs a center fielder and that bodes well for Dexter Fowler's chances of remaining with the organization. Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post tweets that the Rockies had talks with the Phillies and that Philadelphia had interest in both Fowler and outfielder Michael Cuddyer. Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jockety told MLB.com's Mark Sheldon on Monday, "I'm not sure Colorado is moving Fowler." The Reds are still looking for a center fielder and leadoff man after lacking production from both spots in 2012. Fowler would certainly be a fit with the Reds, but it remains to be seen if the Rockies are willing to deal him or not.

-- Renck also tweets that former Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs has agreed in principle to a one-year deal with the Seibu Lions.

-- According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, free agent infielder Matt Downs is drawing interest from three teams and the Rockies are one of them.

-- The Rockies have signed the following players to minor league deals: RHP Jeff Manship, 1B Henry Wrigley, C Gustavo Molina (no relation), RHP Jason Burr, and UTL Hernan Iribarren.
