Cross two more items - a fifth starter and a set-up man - off Ruben Amaro Jr's to-do list. Both chores were completed Saturday morning when the Phillies signed reliever Mike Adams and starter John Lannan as free agents.

The Phillies have long had an interest in reliever Mike Adams and they were finally able to acquire the 34-year old right-hander Saturday, signing him to a free agent contract. Adams gets a two-year, $12-million deal that has a vesting option for the 2015 season.

There are a couple ways that Adams could get the third year of the deal to vest; the first is by making 120 appearances over the first two seasons, with at least half of them coming in 2014. The second way is for Adams to make at least 65 appearances in 2014. Should Adams meet the first requirement, he would get $6.5-million for the third season, but that falls to $6-million if he reaches only the second requirement. The Phillies also hold a $6-million club option for 2015 should Adams fall short of either vesting option.

Adams is thought of by many as the best set-up man in baseball and the Phillies had attempted to acquire him during the 2011 season while he was with the Padres. Instead, San Diego dealt Adams to Texas, where he pitched the remainder of that season and also last season.

In his career, Adams has made 358 relief appearances with a 2.28 ERA, but he has been even better over the past five seasons, when his ERA stands at 1.98 in his time with San Diego and Texas.

Lannan has pitched all or part of six seasons with the Washington Nationals and has a career mark of 45-42 with a 4.01 ERA in 134 starts. He made his major league debut at Citizens Bank Park in 2007 and hit Chase Utley with a pitch during that game, that broke a bone in Utley's hand and put him on the DL for a month.

The Phillies agreed to a one-year deal with Lannan worth $2.5-million, but he can double that value by reaching incentives that are included in the contract. Lannan made $5-million last season, but pitched primarily at Triple-A, going 9-11, 4.30 in 24 starts with Syracuse. He made six starts with the Nationals, going 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA.

Both deals are pending physicals.
