Continuing the coverage from last weekend's PG World showcase in Fort Myers, Kiley gives us a scouting report and video of the 5th ranked player from the event, Roberto Gonzalez.
5. Roberto Gonzalez, OF, University HS (FL), Miami-Dade JC (FL) commit
6'2/190, L/L, 19.2 on Draft Day
Gonzalez is a well-rounded, athletic prospect but he is over a year older than some of his peers in this year's prep class. He's an above average runner that's a little better underway, has above average arm strength and has broad shoulders that should allow him to add some strength. It's a classic right field profile and there's enough hitting potential here to project Gonzalez as an everyday player.
He flashes solid-average raw power to all fields and has advanced feel to go the opposite way in games. Gonzalez lets the ball travel deep but his wrap load can go a little too deep an affect his timing. At times, it makes him a little late and can cause a slight uppercut and other times the bat drags through the zone and he bars his lead arm, lengthening his path to the ball.
There's a good mix of athleticism, torque, fluidity, loft and bat speed in Gonzalez's swing and potential for five average or better tools. Despite his advanced age relative to his peers, there's some projection and players with an early feel to go the other way often take a little longer to develop. Gonzalez could fit anywhere from the 2nd-4th rounds depending on how his spring goes, but should be signable enough to find a home in the top half of that range.
