2015/2016 MLB Draft Rankings (May 2014): 2015 College, 2016 College & 2015-16 High School

How Many Names?

If you think ranking 500 draft prospects is ridiculous, then I'm your guy. I ranked 291 and today I've released my worksheets of the rest of the top 10-15 round talents in college/junior college (255 more) and high school (203 more) for 749 total players. I only ranked less than half because rankings don't mean much past about 150 or so since the talent runs together, but the cutoff for the top 291 list was top 5-7 rounds, while the extras lists are prep prospects almost certainly going to college (with a chance to go in the top 5 rounds in 3 years) and the college prospects with some kind of hope to reach the majors. Hundreds of college seniors and junior college players that will sign for bonuses under $50,000 and populate rounds 20-40 to fill out minor league rosters have been ignored for these rankings, with the top players not expected to sign from high school (and some from college) listed instead. In my next article that encompasses all of these rankings in one article, I'll share what signability information I've collected so far.

Gory Details

These are my rankings—how I would pick the players—and not my best approximation of industry consensus. In most cases, those are basically the same, but there are some spots where I differ with the popular opinion. Fans drastically underrate how much difference there is on draft boards from team-to-team, so no matter how wacky or spot on you think one of my rankings is, I can guarantee there's at least a few teams with me and against me on each one.

I also don't factor in signability, even though there are some players on this list that are considered unsignable where I and the industry have them rated. In a few days, I'll release a draft board with this list, the rest of the over 700 players I've ranked or listed in the last month and some features to make it feel like an actual draft board, such as a signability notation. For my mock draft, I take industry consensus, team-specific rumors and signability into consideration, along with other things that aren't factors for this list. To give you an idea of my opinion differing from the industry consensus, a couple players in that first round projection are in the 50's on this list (mostly polarizing prep hitters),

The position I list is their projected pro fit and in the case where I list two (like C/1B for Kyle Schwarber) that's when I think they'll play both positions in the big leagues (usually a fringy defensive catcher who can contribute there part-time but fits better in the field). Where I denote both a pitcher and hitter position, that means it isn't clear which position is their best long-term fit.

I'll be driving around Florida up until draft day, hitting the AAC and A-Sun conference tournaments, various high school showcases including the big one in Sebring, along with at least one of the college regionals in the Sunshine State; follow me on Twitter for up to the second thoughts. I haven't looked up the numbers for this list, but for reference, I've personally scouted 104 of the 116 players on last week's draft rankings list, including 71 of the top 72. See that list for some general thoughts about the class, some of the news that broke last week and some early signability prep talents.
